Medical sensors assemblies with shielding elements are provided that may be applied to a sensor body to reduce ambient light infiltration. In one embodiment, the shielding elements may be applied only about a portion of the sensor body such that an additive pressure of the shielding element and the sensor body on the patient's tissue is reduced. For example, the shielding element may include openings that reduce the total surface area of the sensor body that is covered by the shielding element. In addition, such shielding elements may be provided as separate accessories for a sensor that may be applied only when ambient light infiltration is detected.

1. A sensor assembly, comprising:
a sensor body comprising a first lobe and a second lobe coupled by a neck; an emitter disposed on a patient-contacting side of the sensor body on the first lobe and configured to transmit light into a patient tissue; a first detector disposed on the patient-contacting side of the sensor body on the second lobe and configured to detect a first portion of light passing through the patient tissue; a second detector disposed on the patient-contacting side of the sensor body on the second lobe and configured to detect a second portion of light passing through the patient tissue, wherein the first detector is closer to the emitter than the second detector; an adhesive layer disposed about at least a portion of a perimeter of the sensor body; and a shielding element configured to be adhered to the sensor body on a surface opposing the patient-contacting surface and to the adhesive layer, wherein the shielding element, when adhered to the sensor body, extends beyond the perimeter of the sensor body and does not cover the sensor body in an area corresponding to the emitter, the first detector, and the second detector.
