PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a molten state comparable with that achieved using heavy oil, while suppressing the generation of sulfur oxides as low as possible, when raw materials for an alkali metal silicate are melted.SOLUTION: A method for melting raw materials for an alkali metal silicate comprises: forming a flame from the central portion of a burner by bringing a fuel having a sulfur component concentration of ≤5 ppm into contact with part of heated combustion air; supplying the remainder of the heated combustion air from the periphery of the central portion of the burner; and supplying a raw material mixture for an alkali metal silicate including silicon dioxide and an alkali metal carbonate toward the flame to thereby melt the mixture by heating. |
