<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a liquid less likely to remain in a space. <P>SOLUTION: A printer includes a head 1, a cap mechanism 40, a wiper unit, and a controller controlling them. When a discharge space S1 is to be brought into a state of being sealed from an outer space S2, the controller controls the cap mechanism 40 and the wiper unit to perform an approaching operation for moving a lip member 42 to a second abutment position, and then to perform a second wiping operation for wiping a surface 10a of a facing member 10.
