One embodiment of the present invention provides a controlling device for a vehicle door opening and closing member that comprises: a drive motor; a first switching unit that selectively outputs a first potential or a second potential; a second switching unit that is provided between the first switching unit and a first input terminal of the drive motor and that outputs the output from the first switching unit to the first input terminal of the drive motor; a switching mechanism that selectively outputs the first potential or the second potential to a second input terminal of the drive motor; a detecting unit that outputs a signal indicating the direction of rotation of the drive motor; and a controlling unit that causes the drive motor to selectively rotate in a first direction or a second direction by controlling the first and second switching units and the switching mechanism and that causes the second potential to be output from the second switching unit to the first input terminal of the drive motor by controlling the second switching unit when the first switching unit is determined to be stuck on the basis of the signal from the detecting unit.
