The invention provides a means for translating a 5-unit code to an 8-unit code, the 8-unit code being such that no character signal contains more than three consecutive elements having the same polarity and so that there can be no more than three consecutive elements of similar polarity in any sequence of elements. In the embodiment described, a tape transmitter feeds 5-unit signals to set five trigger circuits. Three further triggers are provided, these being set in accordance with the above requirements by means of a number of diode gates which are fed by the first five triggers. There is an additional feature that each character signal has four mark and four space elements, additional gates are necessary to ensure this. Specification 774,509 is referred to. |
