PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grain oriented electrical steel which has stable and excellent magnetic characteristics and coating adhesion even when quick heating is carried out in primary recrystallization annealing (decarbonization annealing).SOLUTION: A grain oriented electrical steel includes a tension application type insulation coating consisting of a coating layer A which is based on an oxide and formed on the side of a steel sheet and a coating layer B which is based on a vitreous material and formed on the front side, on the surface of a steel sheet, and the ratio (&sgr;/&sgr;) of a tension &sgr;which the front-side coating layer B applies to the steel sheet to a tension &sgr;which the steel sheet-side coating layer A applies to the steel sheet is 1.20-4.0.
