A rapid exchange balloon catheter comprising: an outer conduit comprising a lumen and a wall surrounding the lumen, the wall comprises a lateral opening formed therein; an inner conduit having a proximal end and a distal end, the inner conduit is suitable for total or partial passage over a guide wire, the inner conduit is movably disposed within the lumen of the outer conduit, the inner conduit has an angled proximal end that passes through the lateral opening of the wall of the outer conduit such that the angled proximal end of the inner conduit can be axially moved within the lateral opening, and the distal end of the inner conduit extends beyond the distal end of the outer conduit; a sealing sleeve for sealing the lateral opening of the outer conduit, the sealing sleeve is sealingly attached to the proximal end of the inner conduit such that the sealing sleeve can axially move along the outer conduit when the inner conduit is axially moved within the outer conduit; a balloon whose proximal margin is attached to the outer surface of the distal end of the outer conduit, and whose distal margin is attached to the outer surface of the portion of the inner conduit that extends beyond the distal end of the outer conduit; a pushing-pulling mechanism disposed in the outer conduit, for causing axial pushing-pulling movements of the inner conduit and of the sealing sleeve, the pushing-pulling mechanism is configured to controllably proximally pull the inner conduit to cause intussuscepting of the balloon to form a cavity within the balloon; and a fluid port for the introduction of an expansion fluid into an annular space formed between the inner surface of the outer conduit and the outer surface of the inner conduit and into the lumen of the balloon, and for the removal of the expansion fluid from the lumen of the balloon and from the annular space.
