The present invention relates to a surface modification reagent for inorganic nanoparticles. In a preferred embodiment, said surface modification reagent comprises of an oligo-ethylene glycol backbone with a phosphonate (ester, acid or salt) and an additional functional group suitable for chemically coupling with a complementary functionalized receptor. Also disclosed herein is the application of said surface modification reagent in producing a functionalized nanoparticle. The method comprises the steps of reacting a nanoparticle with the surface modification reagent to form a surface modified particle; and coupling said surface modified particle to a complementary functionalized biological active molecule to produce the bio-functionalized particle. |
