In a gas washing apparatus the gas to be washed is sprayed by sprays 8, Fig. 1, as it passes downwardly through a convergent conduit 9 to impinge on the surface of a body of liquid 3 before passing upwardly between baffles 17, Fig. 2, the mixture of gas and entrained liquid thus formed striking against the lowermost of a series of baffles arranged in the space below the gas outlet 5. In a modification a set of contact plates is arranged underneath the lowermost baffle 11 and above there is an upwardly directed liquid spray and a plate supporting a bed of Raschig rings sprayed with liquid from above and through which the washed gas is passed before traversing the remaining baffles 11. |
