Paints and varnishes are rendered mildewproof by incorporating therein a phenyl mercuric propionate composition having from 3 to 15% of di-(propionoxy mercuric) benzene.ALSO:Alkyd resins are protected against mildew by incorporating a phenyl mercuric propionate composition containing from 3 to 15% of di(propionic mercuric) benzene.ALSO:A phenyl mercuric propionate composition containing from 3 to 15% of di-(propionoxy mercuric) benzene is prepared by reacting 1 part of mercuric oxide with 3 to 7 parts by weight of each of benzene and propionic acid or by reacting 25 parts by weight of mercuric oxide with about 150 parts by weight of each of benzene and propionic acid.ALSO:Seeds are protected from attack by organisms by treating the seeds with a phenyl mercuric propionate, containing 3 to 15% of di-(propionoxy mercuric) benzene, dissolved in water and/or one or more organic solvents, or in the form of a dust, paste or aqueous suspension comprising, also, one or more inert substances such as clay, tacl and calcium silicate and, if desired, a wetting agent.ALSO:A fungicidal, insecticidal, ovicidal, sporicidal or bactericidal composition comprises a phenyl mercuric propionate composition containing from 3 to 15% of di-(propionoxy mercuri) benzene. The composition may be in the form of solutions e.g. in xylene, cellosolve, water, hydrocarbons, like naphtha, mineral spirits and other petroleum distillates, like kerosene and heavy lubricating oil, benzene and toluene; ethylene glycol and its ethers and esters; various solvents for linseed oil and oleoresinous materials, like turpentine, pine oil and the like; aliphatic and aromatic esters, like ethyl acetate, propionate and benzoate, benzyl benzoate, and the like; ketones, like acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, etc.; and halogenated solvents such as chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene chloride and chlor-benzene. Mixtures of various solvents may also be employed such as xylene-naphtha, toluene-mineral spirits, and the like, in the non-polar systems; and cellosolve-water, alcohol-water, Carbowaxes-water, and the like in the polar systems, pastes and dust, e.g. with clay, talc, calcium silicate or other inert diluents. Methyl cellulose, dispersing and wetting agents may also be incorporated. The composition may be incorporated in aqueous and oleoresinous paints, oleaginious materials and oils to prevent deterioration and spoilage due to organisms and may be added to treatment waters in paper and paper board manufactured to prevent formation of slime. |
