In a guillotine having an adjustable back stop at least two spaced apart rollers on the same side of the blades as the back stop provide support for the part of the plate to be sheared which projects through the blades, the roller nearest the blades being provided with movable supporting means adapted to follow the vertical displacement of the upper blade during the shearing operation and having means for providing rotation of the roller during the upward stroke of the blades so as to impart movement to the cut-off portion of the plate away from the blades. The back gauge comprises a cross-bar 27 guided by slide bars 28 and displaced towards and away from the blades by cables 30 and 40 connected to a hand operated carriage 34 which moves along a graduated scale 35. The stop members 15 are pivoted to the cross-bar at 44 and maintained in the plane of the workpiece t by a roller 44b which runs on a member 46, which forms part of a parallel link system pivoted to the machine frame at 47a and to the movable blade carrier 16 at 48. Since one end of the member 46 is linked to the upper blade carrier, as the cut is made the stops 15 swing downwards and free the cut piece of plate. When the width to be cut off is greater than the maximum allowed by the stops 15, then secondary stops 50, mounted in the cross-bar 27, are used. The stops 15 can be raised above the plane of the plate by operation of a lever 49. The support roller assembly comprises a freelyrotatable roller 2 mounted on a bracket 13 which is adjustable along a bar 14, and a roller 1 mounted on an arm 4 pivoted to a bracket 12 arid also adjustable along the bar 14. Integral with the roller 1 is a gear-wheel 3 which meshes with a gear sector 11 secured to the bracket 12. The arm 4 also carries a roller which runs on a member 8 pivoted to the shear frame at 9 and connected to the upper blade carrier 16 by a link 7. As the cut is made the roller 1 descends and as the blade 6 returns the roller 1 rises and is rotated clockwise, as seen in Fig. 1, by the roller which runs on the member 8. A ratchet mechanism prevents rotation of roller 1 on the downstroke of the blade 6. The plate to be sheared is clamped by hold-downs 69.</p> |
