A flow of liquid solvent is provided onto the surface of a sample 2 to be analysed so that the liquid forms a liquid junction 5 on the surface of the sample 2 and wherein analyte molecules to be ionised are extracted into the liquid junction 5. A laser energy source emits a laser beam 6 which causes analyte ions or an analyte plume 8 to be desorbed from the liquid junction 5. Alternatively, acoustic or thermal energy source can be used to desorb analyte ions from the solvent - analyte mixture. The flow of liquid onto the sample may be matched with the ablation rate of the liquid-analyte mixture. An electro-spray arrangement may be provided to enhance analyte ionisation prior to mass analysis. |
