A method of decarburising silicon steel comprises heating the steel to 875 DEG C. to 1025 DEG C. in an atmosphere of a pure inert gas containing water vapour. The steel should be given a clean bright surface by shot blasting and pickling in a hydrochloric/hydrofluoric acid mixture before decarburising. The inert gas may be nitrogen, helium, argon, neon, or krypton and water vapour may be added to give a dew-point of between -40 DEG F. and 35 DEG F. The decarburisation may be carried out during a stress relief anneal at 925-955 DEG C. It is stated that the carbon may be reduced to below 0,001%. |
