An index mechanism for a gear-cutting machine comprises a housing 8, a rotatable and axially movable shaft 26 having a pin 27 for engagement in slots 31 of a work-carrying spindle 9 to index the latter, an hydraulic vane motor 38, 39 for rotating shaft 26, an hydraulic piston 34 for moving pin 27 on shaft 26 axially into and out of engagement with slots 31 and valve means 56 for controlling motor 38, 39 and piston 34. A gear-wheel 6 is held on spindle 9 by a chuck 11, the latter being controlled by an hydraulically actuated draw rod 12. Spindle 9 is supported for rotation in housing 8 by roller 21 and is clamped during the cutting of a tooth in the work by supplying hydraulic pressure to an annulus 17, thus forcing faces 15, 16 into contact. Piston 34 is rotated with shaft 26 and has peripheral grooves which engage ports in a cylinder 33 to control its own reciprocating motion and also the supply of pressure to annulus 17. In operation, fluid is pumped from a sump 43, Fig. 6, to a reversing valve 56 and thence to chamber 41 in motor 38, 39 and also to the bottom of piston 34 and to annulus 17, thus holding spindle 9 stationary during cutting. At the conclusion of cutting, a switch 62 is actuated by a cam 63 on the cutter spindle causing reversal of valve 56 and clockwise rotation of vane 39. Shaft 26 along with piston 34 rotates and annulus 17 is exhausted, thus releasing spindle 9. Pin 27 enters a slot 31 and indexes gear 6 one pitch, until pressure is again supplied to annulus 17 and spindle 9 is clamped and piston 34 moves downwardly to disengage pin 27 from slot 31. Cam 63 again reverses valve 56 and shaft 26 is moved to its previous angular position. For accurately positioning shaft 26, plate 32 has notches 65 engageable by a pawl 66 which is lifted clear of notches 65, when shaft 26 is in its upper position and pin 27 enters a slot 3, by a cam 71.
