893,463. Treating olefin-diene copolymers. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Jan. 25, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 2563/60. Class 2(6) A highly crystalling copolymer is prepared by treating a copolymer of an alpha-olefin of 2 to 10 carbon atoms with a 2-substituted-1À3 diene said copolymer having residual carbon to carbon unsaturation located predominantly in the pendant ethylenic groups attached to the main polymer chain with no more than one mole per cent of residual unsaturation in the main chain and having an intrinsic viscosity of 0À3 (0À1% solids, 150‹C., alpha-chloronaphthalene) with a cationic or peroxidic condensing agent. Specified olefin-diene copolymers are those of ethyleneisoprene (preferably 90 to 99 ethylene-10 to 1 isoprene) prepared by copolymerizing in a liquid halogenated hydrocarbon such as chlorobenzene at -40 tp 10% in the presence of a reducible metal compound of Groups IV A , V A or VI A , iron, cobalt, copper, nickel or manganese and a metal hydride of a compound of a metal of Group I to III (see Specification 893,462). Specified cationic condensing agents are boron trifluoride, aluminium trichloride or tribromide, titanium tetrachloride, stannic ferric, stannous, beryllium and zinc chloride, aluminium triiodide, hydrogen fluoride, sulphuric and phosphoric acids, phosphorous oxychloride and polyphosphoric acid, while peroxidic agents are di-tertiary butyl peroxide, ethyl hydroperoxide, dimethyl, dipropyl dioxide, benzoyl or lauryl peroxide, tbutyl perbenzoate, isopropyl percarbonate, peracetic acid, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxides, t-butyl peracetate and dibenzoyl diperoxide. Solvents, e.g. hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, and heterocyclics may be present The copolymer is presumed to undergo cyclisation. |
