An apparatus 100 for supporting at least a part of a person comprises an inflatable item 101. The inflatable item comprises an outer wall 102 defining a cavity 103 for receiving a gas, a first opening 104 for allowing a gas to enter the cavity and a second opening 105 for allowing a gas to escape from the cavity. In a preferred embodiment, the outlet is provided with a pressure relief valve 401 configured to allow gas to escape the cavity when the pressure within the cavity exceeds a threshold value above the ambient pressure and to prevent gas escaping when the pressure within is below the threshold value. The pressure relief valve may comprise a check valve having a ball 504 and a spring 505 urging the ball against a seat 503. The inflatable apparatus may be a mattress, mattress topper or a barrier to be attached to a footboard or rail of a bed. The apparatus may also form an inflatable device for location about the foot of a person. A method of manufacturing an inflatable apparatus is also disclosed. |
