1,029,781. Casting under pressure. COMMISSARIAT A. L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 29, 1963 [Aug. 31, 1962], No. 34235/63. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F4] Casing apparatus comprises a double-walled water-cooled gastight enclosure 11 divided into upper and lower vacuum compartments 12 and 13 respectively. The upper compartment 12 houses a screened electric furnace 1 with a crucible 5 which is connected to a heated mould 8, in the lower compartment 13, by an inverted U tube 32. A pipe 16 connects compartment 12 with compartment 13 which are connected to an extractor pump system 18. A valve 21 isolates the furnace compartment 12 from the mould compartment 13. In operation, the compartments are evacuated and the metal in the crucible is melted, the valve 21 is then closed and an inert gas such as argon is supplied, via pipe 22 from a reservoir 23, into the furnace compartment 12. The admission of argon creates a pressure differential between chambers 12 and 13 causing the metal to flow through the U tube into the mould means are provided for equalizing the pressure in the compartments to permit the removal of the casting from the mould. The enclosure 11 and the extractor system 18 are enclosed in separate sealed housings which are interconnected and transportable. |
