In order to prevent the interior of a hollow workpiece being choked with dross during acetylene torch cutting, one or more torches are pivotally adjusted so that they remove segmentshaped portions and are then rotated around the workpiece to extend the cut-away segments and so leave a residual annular portion which is then cut away by further pivotally altering the direction of the cutting torches and subsequent circular movement of the torches. In a machine for cutting a thick-walled tubular ingot 2 as it issues from a continuous casting-machine, a pair of opposed torches 8, 10 are pivotally mounted on a sleeve 24 rotatably mounted on a truck in a casing 4. The sleeve 24 which is water cooled is rotated within the casing by a motor 16. A second motor 18 mounted on the sleeve 24 adjusts the torches 8, 10 about their pivots. The casing 4 is movable in guides 14 longitudinally of the ingot 2 so that the torches 8, 10 can cut the ingot 2 as it issues from the casting machine. After the pre-heating the torches 8, 10 are rotated through 180 degrees whilst set angularly in opposite directions to cut the ingot as shown in Fig. 4b. Subsequently the torches are turned in a few degrees, as shown in Fig. 4e, and rotated back to the starting position so completing the cut.
