Provided is a planar lighting device configured to achieve light emission with an angle with respect to a light-exit surface of the planar lighting device. Also, provided is a display device with a display panel viewable, even when the display panel is seen obliquely. According to a first aspect of the present invention, it is disclosed that a planar lighting device includes a light-guide plate 2; a light source 3 including a light-emitting surface 3a that faces a first side surface 2ca of the light-guide plate and the light source with a center line that passes through a center of the light-emitting surface 3a of the light source and that is perpendicular to the first side surface 2ca of the light-guide plate 2; a first prism sheet 4 including a prism 40 arranged on a lower surface of the first prism sheet 4; and a second prism sheet 6 including a prism 60 arranged on an upper surface. It is disclosed that a ridge line of the prism arranged on the lower surface of the first prism sheet extends in parallel with the center line of the light-emitting surface of the light source. Also, it is disclosed that a ridge line of the prism arranged on the upper surface of the second prism sheet extends substantially perpendicular to the center line of the light-emitting surface of the light source. In addition, a display device including the planar lighting device according to the aspect of the present invention.
