A variable belt tensioner 480, of an internal combustion engine comprises an electric motor 500, a worm drive 510, a lever drive 520 and a belt tensioner roller 490. The worm drive 510 is driven by the electric motor 500 and is connected to the lever drive 520, to which the worm drive 510 transmits a rotation, the lever drive 520 is connected to the roller 490, to which the lever drive 520 transmits a translation, thus allowing the roller 490 to adjust the belt tensioning. The lever drive comprises three levers (A, B and C, fig 2), a third lever (C) rotates around an axis of rotation at a first end of the third lever (C) and the roller 490 is constrained to a second end of the third lever (C) so that the rotation of the third lever (C) around the axis of rotation implies a translation to the second end of the lever (C) and roller 490, thus increasing or decreasing the belt tensioning.
