941,365. Crystalline butadiene polymers. MONTECATINI SOC GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA MINERARIA E CHIMICA. Nov. 14, 1960 [Nov. 18, 1959; April 5, 1960], No. 39026/60. Drawings to Specification. Heading C3P. Crystalline polymers of 1, 3-butadiene having substantially syndiotactic -1, 2 structure are prepared by processes which comprise contacting butadiene with a catalyst formed by contacting a halogen free salt of a metal of Group VIII of the MendelÚeff Periodic Table with an aluminium trialkyl under such conditions that polymerization occurs. In a modification the catalyst is formed by contacting the metal salt with a mixture of an aluminium trialkyl and an aluminium dialkyl halide in a molar ratio of at least 0À8:1. Specified salts are the sulphates, phosphates, nitrates, carbonates, sulphides, cyanides, xanthates, acetates, propionates, butyrates, oxalates, 2-ethylhexanoates, acetylacetonates, benzoates, stearates and naphthenates. Salts of cobalt, nickel, platinum or palladium may be used in the form of complexes with pyridine, pyrrole, morpholine, aliphatic amines, nitriles, amides, alcohols, ketones, phosphines, alkyl phosphates and alkyl phosphites. Specified trialkyls are trimethyl, triethyl, tripropyl and triisobutyl aluminium. Specified dialkyl halides are diethyl and diisobutyl aluminium chloride. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of benzene, toluene, xylene or excess butadiene. Examples describe the polymerization of butadiene in benzene in the presence of catalysts formed from (1 to 4 and 8) cobalt stearate/pyridine complex and triethyl aluminium; (5 and 10) cobalt acetylacetonate and triethyl aluminium; (6) (a) cobalt phosphate and triisobutyl aluminium, (b) after aging; (7) (a) cobalt sulphate and triisobutyl aluminium, (b) after ageing; and (9) cobalt stearate/pyridine complex, triethyl aluminium and diethyl aluminium chloride. The polymers may be made into shaped articles such as films and fibres.
