An extrusion machine with an axially displaceable screw 2 is provided with a throttle, located between the hopper 3 and the orifice, comprising at least one annular collar 5 having a diameter the same as or smaller than that of the cylinder 1 and which co-operates with an annular groove 7 in the cylinder 1. A discharge vent 9 is provided. More than one collar 5 may be provided and in the case of twin screw machines the collar or collars on one screw may be longitudinally staggered in relation to the collars of the other screw. The screw may be made of two portions screwed together in the region of the collar.
