Acetonitrile is made by contracting a gaseous mixture of an acyclic unsubstituted acyclic C2-3 organic compound which is a monohydic alcohol, aldehyde, ketone or a saturated carboxylic acid, ammonia and oxygen with a catalyst comprising bismuth phosphomolybolate at 500-1000 DEG F. Specified organic compounds are ethenol, acetaldehyde, acetone, acetic acid, iso and normal propanol. The gaseous mixture may contain inert diluents e.g. nitrogen and steam. The catalyst may be supported and may be in the form of pellets or suitable for fluidisation, and may also contain promoters (see Division B1).ALSO:A bismuth-phosphomolybdate catalyst which may be supported on silica, alumina, silica-alumina, silicon carbide or "Alundun" (Alundun is a Registered Trade Mark) and which may contain less than 5% promoter, e.g. the oxides of arsenic, iron or boron, and having a preferred surface area of 10 to 100 m.2/g. and may be in the form of pellets or suitable for use in fluidized reactors is used in the synthesis of acetonitrile (see Division C2). Example 1 describes the preparation of a silica supported catalyst using silica gel, phosphoric acid, ammonium molybdate and bismuth nitrates and includes the steps of tableting and heat treatment of the tablets. |
