A stretchable filter band 20, Fig. 2, trained around a drum 11 and rollers 16 and 21, is maintained in wrinkle-free condition by providing on it two indicia 60<SP>1</SP> (one at each edge), sensing their relative positions electrically at 61<SP>1</SP>, and providing mechanism connected to the sensing means to stretch one edge of the band and relax the other edge if the indicium on the first edge gets ahead of that on the other edge, or vice versa. First embodiment Roller 16, Figs. 2 and 6, has variable-diameter and sections 31, 31<SP>1</SP>, each consisting of four segments 36, Fig. 7, movable radially outwards by axially-slidable cones 45 and movable radially inwards by an endless spring 43. The cones are moved simultaneously and in the same direction by fork devices engaging grooves near their outer ends, the fork devices being connected by a screw-and-nut device to an electric motor controlled by the sensing means (magnetic-pick-up coils). Second embodiment Instead of the above cone device, the roller equivalent to 21, Fig. 2, is mounted (Fig. 12) so as to be tiltable about a horizontal axis which is perpendicular to the drum and roller axes, the tilting mechanism consisting of screw- and-nut mechanism 127, 128, bevel gears 132, 133, a rod 129 and a motor 520. |
