An impedance matching circuit for an electrically small antenna 9 comprises a series-coupled negative impedance converter (NIC) 1-8 in parallel with a passive one-port network such as a resistor-capacitor circuit 14-17. The passive circuit improves impedance matching and circuit stability. The matching circuit further comprises a series inductor 10 in the antenna port and a shunt capacitor 11 in the other port.
