Structurants for oil phases

Polyester oil structurants are obtainable by the reaction of a C4 to C10 Q dicarboxylic acid, a polyol and a C16 to C30, particularly a C20 to C24, monocarboxylic fatty acid. The structurants can be used to provide structure, particularly thickening and/or gelling, in oils of a wide range of polarity. Thickened oils can find application in a range of personal care and other applications.

1. A polyester oil structurant compound obtainable by the reaction of:
i) a polyol; ii) a C4 to C10 dicarboxylic acid; and iii) a C16 to C30 monocarboxylic fatty acid;wherein:
i) the molar ratio of the polyol:dicarboxylic acid:monocarboxylic fatty acid used in the reaction is 1:0.5-0.95:1-2.5; and ii) the polyester oil structurant compound has a hydroxyl number of 15 to 250 mg(KOH)g−1, a number average molecular weight of 1,000 to 10,000, and a weight average molecular weight of from 2,500 to 20,000.
