A heat and vapour resistance lightweight insulating board comprises a core of expanded alkenyl aromatic or alpha-olefin resin covered with a tightly adhering coating of an expanded resin having a second order transition temperature above that of the core material. The core material may be the homopolymer of styrene, methylstyrene, ethylstyrene, vinylxylene or chlorostyrene, copolymers thereof, or copolymers of these compounds with divinylbenzene, methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile; or polymers of ethylene or propylene, or copolymers thereof with each other or butylene. The coating may be a rigid or semi-rigid foamed castor oil-,polyester-, or polyether-type polyurethane resin and may be applied by spraying or moulding. The core material and coating material may contain pigments, fillers and self-extinguishing agents. The core material may be expanded by extrusion of a mobile gel containing a blowing agent or by a foaming-in-place bead technique. The coated boards may be used to form a roof structure by being placed on a wood, concrete or steel roof deck and then being permanently joined at all joints, butts or cut pieces with polyurethane foam.
