MICROSTIMULATOR HAVING SELF-CONTAINED POWER SOURCE AND BI-DIRECTIONAL TELEMETRY SYSTEM

An implantable microstimulator includes a hermetically-sealed housing and an electronic subassembly contained therein. At least one electrode external to the housing is electrically coupled to the electronic subassembly. An antenna is coupled to the electronic subassembly. Telemetry circuitry is coupled to the antenna for allowing data- containing signals to be received from at least one external device, the telemetry circuitry comprising first and second telemetry receivers for receiving data over first and second telemetry links respectively in accordance with differing first and second communication protocols. Further, a neurostimulation system is provided including a first external device, a second external device and an implantable microstimulator having an antenna for generating stimulation pulses in accordance with programmed parameters. The first external device and the second external device communicate with the antenna in accordance with differing first and second communication protocols.
