This protection method is designed such that when detecting a fault of an OSU logically connected therewith, an ONU switches a received wavelength to a spare wavelength for logical connection with a spare OSU predesignated for each ONU and does not delete information relating to connection with an OLT. When the OLT detects the OSU fault, the spare OSU for the ONU logically connected with the faulty OSU takes over information relating the ONU, and thereby the ONU logically connected with the faulty OSU resumes communication in a short time.
