A fluid-blast switch comprises a hollow insulating body 1 divided by a wall 9 into chambers 2, 3 containing respectively a movable pin 4 co-operating with terminals 5, 6 and quenching terminals 7, 8, 16 . . . 19, the last four being carried by tubular conductors 10, 11 arranged between insulating nozzles 26, 27, 32. Members 5, 7 and 6, 8 are joined by guide conductors passing through apertures 20, 25 in the wall 9 and further conductors 12 . . . 15 carried by tubes 10, 11 pass through apertures 21 . . . 24 to the vicinity of the pin 4. When the switch is opened the arc between members 4, 5 is progressively transferred to the terminals 7, 16 . . . 19, 8 as the pin 4 moves out of the chamber 2, the arcs in this chamber and those drawn between the pin 4 and the conductors 12 . . . 15 producing an arc-extinguishing fluid blast through the chamber 3 which is exhausted through valve-controlled openings 28, 29. Arc extinction may occur before the top of the pin 4 reaches the terminal 6 and transference to the terminals 17, 18 may be assisted by providing further openings in the wall 9. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the chamber 2 has a central fixed contact co-operating with two movable pins and having two guide conductors passing through openings in the members 9, 32. Gas or liquid with or without inert powder may be used as a quenching medium. |
