A rotary duplicatingmachine for printing lines or sections from a master printing sheet on to a copy sheet in immediate succession or at a closer relative spacing than the lines or sections on the master sheet comprises a pair of printing elements, one of which is adapted for carrying the master sheet with the lines or sections thereof extending in the axial direction, means for controlling co-operation of the printing elements in accordance with a predetermined programme, means for feeding a copy sheet to a line of printing between the printing elements, and means for sensing a programme-indicating marking on the copy sheet and operating pre-setting means for the controlling means to allow printing of lines or sections corresponding to the indicated programme. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2, a drum 2 is provided with a master sheet 3 and is coupled by gears 11, 12, 13 to the rotatable contact arm 9 of a multi-position rotary switch 10 having fixed contacts K1-K15. A counterpressure roller 4 is moved into a position cooperating with the drum 2 on the energization of an electromagnet 17 which acts through a link 35 on the junction pin 8 of a toggle linkage 6, 7. A copy sheet 19 is applied to the feed rollers 20, 21 and a marking 22 on the sheet is sensed by a photo-electric device 18 and the resultant impulse is amplified at 26 and causes a relay 27 to respond closing a multi-pole switch 28. The individual contacts 29 of the switch 28 close circuits to certain contacts K1, K2, K3, K5, K8, and K12 corresponding to a printing programme and the electromagnet 17 is energized when the arm 9 encounters those contacts of the switch 10 having closed circuits. A marking 38 on the margin of the sheet 19 is sensed by a device 18c which causes a relay 27c to open a switch 39. This switch is in series with relays 27, 27a and 27b and thus causes cancellation of a previously set programme. In the embodiment of Figs. 3-6 the printing drum 2 is provided with a plurality of pressure segments 40 and carries a master sheet 3. The segments are held in peripheral line with the drum 2 by springs 41, 42 with one segment underlying each line of the master sheet and each segment carries an axially slidable rod 43 having rollers 44, 45 mounted on its ends. On inserting a copy sheet into the feed rollers 20, 21 a programme-indicating marking thereon is sensed by a photo-electric device 23, 24 and a relay closes a multi-pole switch which closes circuits to selected electromagnets 51 arranged opposite the rollers 44 and moves corresponding rollers 44 into the active planes of cams 49 having raised parts 50 coincident with the line of printing A-B. The rods 43 which are moved outwardly when the rollers 44 contact the part 50 of the cam are retracted by a lever 54 after printing. The lever 54 may be moved into an inoperative position. |
