In a rotary shaft seal comprising a rubber ring 11 that grips the shaft 110 and has an integral annular sealing lip 19 at one end engaging a radial face 111 on the shaft housing 112 the lip is formed by a circumferential groove or cut 16 in the ring and has, in its free state, a frusto-conical inner surface 15 with a base angle of between 30 degrees and 60 degrees. The free inner diameter 12 of the ring is less than the shaft diameter so that when mounted it tightly grips the shaft and the force with which the lip 19 engages the face 111 may be varied by axial adjustment of the ring 11 on the shaft and may be such that at a predetermined shaft speed the lip yields under centrifugal force and no longer contacts the face 111. The ring may be made by press-fitting a rubber tube on a wooden rod, rotating the rod, feeding a tool at an angle to the rod axis to cut the tube into rings having conical end faces 14, 15 and then grinding or cutting the V-shaped groove 16 in each ring. In a modification, Fig. 4, the groove 16 is replaced by a cut 26 which, when the ring is mounted on the shaft 210, is opened by providing a groove 213 in the shaft adjacent the part 214 of the ring.
