The invention provides compositions and methods for treating and preventing pulmonary conditions with dysfunctional bronchiole dilatation such as acute asthma and bronchiolitis. The methods employ a formulation containing phospholipids alone or phospholipids with a surfactant polypeptide described herein to enhance dilatation of bronchioles and possibly expansion of atelectatic alveoli in the patients.
