The invention relates to a method for characterizing a positron-emission tomography (PET) system. Said PET system includes a polygonal detection chamber (5). Said detection chamber (5) comprises a plurality of sensors (6) which define a field of vision. Said characterization method includes: breaking down the field of vision into volume elements; and constructing a set of detection tubes. Each detection tube extends into the field of vision between two detection elements of two separate sensors, respectively. Said characterization method is also provided to combine each detection tube with a core detection tube and a core transformation. Said core transformation is such that each detection tube is the image of a core detection tube via implementation of the core transformation.
