PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pharmaceutical composition capable of treating and/or preventing inflammatory gastrointestinal tract disease.SOLUTION: The composition comprises iron hydroxypyrone for increasing the level of iron in patient's bloodstream. There is also provided a composition comprising iron hydroxypyrone for administration to a subject having or at risk of having achlorhydria wherein the gastric pH of the subject is equal to or greater than about 4 or wherein the subject has inflammatory gastrointestinal tract disease.
