Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for identifying a state of a user of a social network. The social network comprises activated users, non-activated users and silent users. States of the silent users are instable, and are finally changed into activated users or non-activated users. The identification method comprises: obtaining a user-event similarity of a user towards a new event; identifying whether a user is a silent user or a non-activated user according to the user-event similarity; and determining the silent user or the non-activated user in the social network is finally in an activated or non-activated state. By means of the foregoing mode, a new user state model of the social network is designed in the present invention, the model comprises an activated state, a non-activated state and an instable silent state, and the final state of a user is inferred under the full consideration of factors that may affect the state of the user, so that the state of the user can be precisely monitored.
