An anode recuperator for a fuel cell system and a method for operating an anode recuperator of a fuel cell system are provided. The anode recuperator for the fuel cell system comprises a first annular fuel passage, annular pre-reformer, annular anode exhaust passage, and the fuel cell system integrates the annular pre-reformer as part of the anode recuperator.
