The object of the invention is a method and an apparatus for handling books and other library material in a library or corresponding location, which solution comprises at least one sorting module (3c) and at least one collection cart (4), which is composed of at least a frame (7), wheels (8) and a pallet (10) provided with a moving back stop (16). The collection cart comprises a power means (18), which is arranged to move the back stop (16) in the direction of the pallet (10) automatically when library material, i.e. articles (5), is loaded onto the pallet (10).
