Microwave system with extended capability to detect, identify and localize moving targets

In the present invention, there is disclosed a microwave system intended particularly for use in system of active protection of combat vehicles. The invented system is based on the use of microwave barriers, i.e. radar sensors provided with antennas having broad transmitting patterns in horizontal plane but narrow in the vertical plane. If such microwave barriers are fastened above a combat vehicle under a typical angle of 45 degrees, they are able to detect arrival of endangering projectiles, to carry out their identification, optionally also to generate signals needful for activation of counter projectiles. The system according to the present invention is enhanced by the addition of another level of the microwave barriers functioning as preliminary barriers (PZ). These are fastened typically under an angle being by 20 degrees greater than the main barriers (HZ). An arriving projectile is thus first detected by the preliminary barriers (PZ) and subsequently by the main barriers (HZ). Advantage of this arrangement is that so modified system can provide the barriers simultaneously and more exactly. When using a certain type of antennas (AFZM), it is possible to combine the function of the preliminary barrier (PZ) and the main barrier (HZ) in one antenna. The result is that the entire system takes up little place on the combat vehicle, only.
