A system 100 for providing electrical power to a facility 120 comprises a generator 102 which generates electrical power when a drive-shaft 104 is rotated, and an intermittent local source of power 103 which provides driving torque to the drive shaft 104. In order to supplement the intermittent driving torque from the local power source 103, an electric motor 101 powered by e.g. mains electricity, is also configured to drive the drive shaft 104. The system defers to the local power supply, so that the motor only drives the generator when insufficient power is available from the local source. The motor 101 may drive the generator at a lower speed than the intermittent source. The intermittent source 103 may be driven by passing vehicles 122, or may be a renewable energy source such as wind, hydro, wave etc. |
