A windscreen cleaning system comprises a suction type wiper motor 11, Fig. 2, controlled by a rack and pinion device 19, 22, Fig. 4, operated by a push-pull control knob 20, a pump 40, operated by a pedal 42, and a connection between the pedal 42 and the rack 19, such that downward movement of the pedal 42 delivers solvent to a windscreen and moves the rack and pinion 19, 22 to start the wiper motor, while a return movement of the pedal recharges the pump with solvent without affecting the rack and pinion so that the wiper motor continues to operate until stopped by manual operation of the control knob 20. When the control knob 20 is pulled to the left the pinion 22 turns clockwise and a second pinion 24, Fig. 3, formed integrally therewith moves a rack 27, coupled to a wiper motor slide valve 31 via the core 28 of a flexible cable 29, to start the motor 11. Conversely if the control knob 20 is pushed to the right the side valve moves to a position stopping the motor. When the pedal 42 of the washer unit is depressed solvent in the bulb 40 is forced through nozzles (not shown) on to the windscreen, and when released a spring 481 returns it to its original position, the bulb 40 expanding and drawing in solvent from a reservoir (not shown). Also on depression of the pedal 42 a core 501 of the flexible cable 39, having one end attached to an arm 43 rigidly coupled to the pedal will be moved so that its other end 511 abuts the rack 19 and moves the wiper control to a position enabling the wiper motor to operate which it will continue to do, even when the pedal returns to its normal position, until the control knob 20 is pushed to the right, as described above.
