In a rotary regenerative heat-exchanger comprising a housing 34 divided into two zones by a diaphragm 26 for the passage of hot and cold gases respectively, and a porous regenerator matrix, rotatably mounted in the housing and extending into both zones; the pressure difference which exists between the gases flowing through the zones and which produces a net force on the matrix in the direction of the lower pressure zone, is compensated for by a device which is responsive to the pressure difference between the zones, and exerts on the matrix a force proportional to such difference. In the form shown, the matrix 16 is of annular form and is divided into two zones by the diaphragm 26, cold air from an air compressor being passed through the lower zone, and hot low-pressure exhaust gas being passed through the upper zone, which is substantially twice the size of the lower zone. The compensating force is exerted vertically downwards by the compensating device situated above the upper periphery of the regenerator; which device comprises an expansible chamber motor 60, a lever 61 in the form of a rhomboidal frame biased by the motor and fulcrumed on an adjustable screw 66, and bogies 64 mounted on the lever 61 and bearing through rollers 80 against the periphery of the matrix 16. The expansible chamber motor 60 comprises a piston 71, movable within a cylinder 72 with a pistonrod 70 acting on the lever 61. The space above the piston has a connection 77 to the air compressor outlet, and a port 78 connects the space below the piston to the exhaust gas zone of the regenerator. The gas pressure difference acting on the piston is aided by a pair of Belleville springs 76. The matrix is supported on rollers 50, 51 positioned below, and adjacent to, the parts of the diaphragm 26 separating the housing 34 into the two zones and is driven by gearing 53, 48.
