A layer of thermoplastics material, such as polyvinyl chloride and its copolymers in a powdered state is fed upon an endless steel band 2, driven from roller 4 and tensioned over spring mounted roller 3, into the nip formed with freely rotatable metal or metal surfaced asbestos roller 6, whilst under pressure from spring mounted roller 7, and is gelled by a high-frequency electric current from source C utilizing belt 2 and roller 6 as electrodes. The gelled sheet is subsequently calendered through electric resistance heated rollers 21.
