A model of an arrangement of one or more networked (11=network) device(s) 1,2,3 in a data centre 9 is generated (with some automation) by capturing an image of the device when it is commanded to emit an ID signal. Preferably the image is received by a portable device 7 which may video plural devices and match a time-code of the images to when each device is commanded to emit it's ID signal. The portable device 7 preferably communicates wirelessly with a central node (via access point 4) on the network that runs software to build the model. The device has an optical receiver 8 such as a camera and may comprise a smartphone or tablet. The emitted signal may comprise LED lights on the device blinking, which may be triggered by network commands or indirectly by causing loading on the device. Preferably the model provides an inventory of the devices, which may include computer servers, power supplies etc. located in racks. The model may be for the arrangement (setting) in a rack. The video may be shot by moving around aisles of racking as figure 2 shows. |
