A spinneret for making variegated filaments comprises a spinning head 11 fitted to a cylindrical chamber 12, cap 13 and spinneret plate 16, the chamber also containing a second spinneret 29 comprising a tube 27, manifold 32 and arms 33 each having a plurality of spaced holes 36. A first spinning solution is supplied through a pipe 21 to a plurality of ports 20 in the chamber 12. A second spinning solution which may be of a different colour or composition from the first is supplied through the pipe 27a, 27 to the manifold 32 and is extruded through the holes 36 to form a plurality of streams of the second spinning solution within the bulk of the first spinning solution in the chamber 12. With the spinneret 29 stationary, the first spinning solution flows through one side of one of the holes in the spinneret 16, and the second through the other side of the same hole, so that a " side-by-side " type of composite filament is obtained, the junction between the two spinning solutions being longitudinal. By oscillation of the tube 27 by means of the lever 47 and mechanism 48, the streams leaving the holes 36 are made to define sinusoidal paths. Oscillation of the tube 27 at a fast rate or through a large amplitude enables filaments to be obtained having alternate longitudinal segments of the two spinning solutions, the junction between any two segments being substantially transverse. Oscillation of the tube 27 at a slow rate or through a small amplitude enables variegated filaments to be obtained in which the junction between the two solutions is intermediate between transverse and longitudinal.
