A method of dyeing yarn to produce a novelty effect, comprises applying the dye to a mass of the yarn confined in the form of a core and setting the dye on the yarn while it is so confined. As shown in Figs 1 and 2 a packed core 40 of crimped yarn passing from a normal stuffer box crimping device by way of a hinged tube 33, has dye sprayed thereon by a pair of nozzles 50a before passing under a tape 50 to be wound, still in packed form, on to a package 41. When the package is completed it is removed and treated by heat or steam to set the dye on the yarn before it is wound into package form. In modified forms of the apparatus shown in Figs 1 and 2 the dye is applied to the tape 50 and is subsequently transferred to the packed core. The dye may be applied to the tape by an applicator roll and dye bath, with or without intermediate rolls or it may be sprayed on in liquid or powder form or the upper side of the tape may co-operate with a plate to form a trough in which lies a pool of dye, a doctor being provided to remove excess dye. If an applicator. roll is used it may be patterned. In Fig. 8, the core of yarn coming from the crimping tube 4a passes between a tape 90 and a drum 85 to be held in its packed form. Dye is applied to the tape by applicator rolls 92, 93, 94 which may be patterned and the core and the tape pass through a heating bath 87 which causes the dye to be transferred to the yarn and be set thereon. The core is then washed at 96 and dried at 97 before the yarn is wound into a package 102. In a further form Fig. 10, (not shown), the packed core emitted from the crimping tube is held between a pair of tapes to which dye may be applied as in Fig. 8 and which is guided, with the core therebetween, through a heated bath to transfer and set the dye on the yarn, a washing bath and finally a dryer, the core then being released so that the yarn can be wound into a package.
