Liquefied gas, e.g. methane, is withdrawn from a storage reservoir comprising a basin scooped out of the earth's surface as claimed in the parent Specification through a duct 5 which passes underground outside the basin prior to connection to a consumer pipe above ground thereby serving to cool the earth formation surrounding the basin. As shown, the basin has concrete side and bottom walls 2, 3 and an insulated roof 1 through which passes a filling tube 13, the inlet tube of a deep well pump 4 discharging into duct 5, a gas bleed-off duct 8 including a compressor and condenser 10 and liquefied gas return ducts 6, 12 which discharge into a spraying tube 7 in the gas space of the reservoir. Liquid gas flowing through duct 5 extends the ice line from A to B. In a modification a plurality of conduits 5, Fig. 3, extend radially from the pump 4 and run parallel to the side wall 2 of the reservoir and open into the closed bottom of vertical ducts 14.
