<p>A pipe cutting apparatus 10 comprises a frame 32a, 32b, for receiving a pipe 20, and cutting means 100a, 100b. The cutting means and the pipe are rotatable with respect to each other, to perform a cut. The cutting means comprise cutting tools and a positioning mechanism for controlling the relative position of the cutting tools with respect to the pipe. The positioning mechanism comprises: secondary biasing means 104a, 104b, attached to the cutting tools, force transmission means 80 connected to the secondary biasing means, and primary biasing means 88 connected to the force transmission means and actuatable by an actuation lever 90 to apply/receive force to/from the secondary biasing means via the force transmission means. The biasing means may comprise compression springs and the force transmission means may comprise a hydraulic device where the primary and secondary biasing means are respectively part of two hydraulic cylinders in fluid communication 102a, 102b. The apparatus may also be used for machine operations such as grooving. The frame may comprise a first frame part of a pair of articulated frame sections 32a, 32b with adjustable gripping means 34, and also a second frame part on which is mounted the tool carrier carrying the cutting means and, opposite the cutting means, a counter support device 120. The cutting means may be carried on a mounting plate attached to the frame via a moveable or interchangeable blanking plate. A method is also detailed for using the apparatus to cut a pipe.</p> |
