A hybrid combustion turbine power generation system (CTPGS) 40 comprising a primary combustion turbine based system 30, and an adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) subsystem. The primary system comprises a power shaft having a motor/generator 15, a compressor 11 and an expansion turbine 14, and a combustor 12 feeding the expansion turbine. The ACAES subsystem comprises a compressed air store 50 and a thermal energy storage (TES) 41 system for removing and returning thermal energy to the compressed air upon charging and discharging the store. The ACAES subsystem further comprises a flow network allowing outlet air from the compressor to pass via the TES system to the compressed air store, and to pass back to the combustor or first expansion turbine, via the TES system. The CTPGS may be operated in a power generating first mode in which the hybrid CTPGS produces power and the subsystem is not discharging. The CTPGS may be operated in a power generating second mode in which the hybrid CTPGS produces power and the subsystem is discharging. |
