[Also in Division E2] A resilient cover 10 for excluding dirt and retaining lubricant within a ball joint assembly having a lubricant supply fitting 30, comprises an annular body 11 adapted to flex at least centrally thereof, and an integral projection 20 terminating in a pair of sealing lips 26 together defining a slit 22. As the ball joint is recharged with fresh lubricant under pressure through the fitting 30, old and dirty lubricant present in the fitting is discharged therefrom between the lips 26 which separate to permit the lubricant to pass. The shank 38 of the ball stud is secured to a vehicle steering knuckle 25. Lubricant flows from the nipple 30 past the ball stud and into a space 23 within the resilient cover 10. The cover 10 retains the lubricant and shields it from dirt and comprises a flexible annular portion 11 with opposite sealing edges in flange 12 and in portion 14, respectively, the flange 12 being secured to the socket 33 by a metal band 41 and a spring 42 and the portion 14 engaging the stud shank 38. An L-shaped reinforcing plastics member 16 of material such as polyamide or acetal resin or polytetrafluoroethylene is embedded in the portion 14. In a modified cover described (Fig. 5, not shown) the slit opens radially. |
